MMEA detains 14 illegal immigrants in waters off Johor

KOTA TINGGI: The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) detained 14 illegal Indonesian immigrants in waters off Teluk Punggai on Wednesday (Nov 24).

Johor MMEA director First Admiral Nurul Hizam Zakaria said they were arrested during Op Benteng.

He said the Johor Area Control Centre (ACC) based in Tanjung Piai, Pontian had detected two boats from Indonesian waters heading towards Teluk Punggai at around 1.20am.

“We immediately informed MMEA and the Royal Malaysian Navy, who are conducting operations in the areas to intercept the two boats,’’ Nurul said in a statement on Thursday (Nov 25).

He said the Tanjung Sepang Tactical headquarters also received the information on the movements of the boats and detained nine illegal immigrants at around 4am.

Nurul added another five suspects were arrested at around 9.30am.

“The Indonesian illegal immigrants are six women and eight men between 20 and 45 years old,’’ said Nurul.

He said they were brought to the Tanjung Sepang Tactical headquarters for further action.
