Radzi denies issuing statement that teachers who nag or disparage students will be punished

PETALING JAYA: A headline in a news portal claiming that teachers who nag or criticise students will be punished was not a statement made by Datuk Dr Radzi Jidin.

The Education Minister said he never made such a statement, adding that the portal even posted a photo of him as if to imply that he had said it.

“The ministry has also never released a table titled ‘(Education Ministry) Disciplinary Unit: Prohibited Forms of Punishment’ in any official document.

“Check the authenticity of a news item before spreading it. Please share this explanation,” he said in a Facebook post on Tuesday (Nov 23).

The ministry also denied issuing the table, saying that disciplinary management procedures it had issued included: the Education (School Discipline) Regulations 1959; circulars on imposing ordinary punishment against students who carry out misconduct not expressed in lesson rules; procedures for taking action and punishment against students; the concept that all teachers are discipline teachers; teachers’ power to cane students; and Implementing Standard Operating Procedures: Reporting and Addressing Discipline Issues.

“The ministry stresses that the procedures for student discipline management are based on the guidelines and circulars mentioned above,” it said in a statement on Tuesday.

Separately, the ministry released a questionnaire on students’ permission to bring and use mobile phones in school.

It said the questionnaire aims to receive feedback from various parties regarding permission to allow students to carry and use mobile phones in schools.

The findings from this survey, the ministry said, will be used to make plans and decisions related to the matter.

The questionnaire can be accessed from Tuesday until Dec 7 at moe.gov.my/e-penyertaanmenu/soal-selidik.
