Semporna Mara polytechnic to close after high dropout rate and RM28.5mil in losses

KUALA LUMPUR: The Majlis Amanah Rakyat (Mara) polytechnic college in Semporna, Sabah, will close down on July 31 after it recorded a high dropout rate and losses amounting to RM28.5mil, the Dewan Rakyat was told.

In a written reply on Tuesday (Nov 23), the Rural Development Ministry said the college recorded an average annual loss of RM2.45mil since it was established in 2010.

“The losses were due to the new intake not achieving targets, as well as high operating costs.

“Based on the explanation above, the operations of the Mara Semporna polytechnic college will be fully closed on July 31, 2022 and this has been approved by the Higher Education ministry,” it said in response to Datuk Mohd Azis Jamman (Warisan-Sepanggar).

Azis had asked if it was true that the college in Semporana would be closed and if so, for what reasons.

Elaborating, the ministry said there were 169 students remaining who would complete their studies in phases, with the final batch of 18 leaving by July.

Students who could not complete their studies by July would be offered the opportunity to resume their courses at other Mara polytechnic colleges in Peninsular Malaysia.

The staff of the Semporna college would be given the chance to relocate to another polytechnic in Peninsular Malaysia, or choose to end their services via a voluntary separation scheme (VSS).

“The Higher Education Ministry has also allocated RM1.33mil for allowances to relocate staff and VSS payouts,” added the Rural Development Ministry.
